The world’s largest and most famous masked ball. Venice’s pre-Lenten Carnevale had existed since the Middle Ages, but it came into its own in the 18th century.
The Carnival is one of the events visited by many tourists and Italians themselves. During this period, especially in Venice and St. Mark’s square are filled with masked people and we organize shows and festivals each year, such as “Parties of Marie” and “flight of the Angel”.
The Venetian carnival tradition is most famous for its distinctive masks. It is common for people to attend the Carnival wearing elaborate costumes, plus masks.
The party starts ten days before martedì grasso (Shrove Tuesday), though plans are afoot to kick off the festivities even earlier. Tourist offices can provide full Carnevale programmes.
